Addictive Justifications

by: Sam Hendrian

Continental breakfast with a stranger
He’d seen naked three times already
Wondering if it was too soon or too late
To show pictures of his kids back home.

The logic of shouldn’t do this but why not
Had been used since early childhood:
First it was one too many cookie,
Next it was a family torn apart.

Of course, two can only keep a secret
If one of them is a murderer
Although that’s what some made him out to be
When word got out to the cousins and in-laws.

Judgment is sourced from hatred,
Hatred is sourced from fear:
Imagine where any of us would be
If we’d lost all faith in “I love you.”

It’s over, I didn’t mean it
He said as he booked another business trip
Hoping what wouldn’t hold up in court
Might hold up in the bedroom.

Either way, what’s another cookie?
What’s another broken heart?
We all want others to participate
In our private pleasure.
