The happiest days open like flowers
with promise.
Sunlight doesn’t burn the soul,
the wind does not pull the flesh
from the heart.
Breath is a kindness and this world
an agreeable host.
Caught by surprise, we laugh in the face
of the inevitable, cast stones
at mortality,
dance upon our own graves.
Gardens grow from these
days without death.
