Drifter’s Love Song
but only just so much
and know that you won’t grieve
when I leave you in the morning
I love the wind in my hair,
the fork in the road,
the whistle of a train,
the smell of a place I’ve never been
inside me deep
yet easy to desert,
a memory of happy
with no need to return
with the dragon’s shape,
breathing fire just for you –
I’ll be king of the world for a moment
then disperse into formless sky
need me just for tonight –
tomorrow I’ll need pavement
singing under my wheels,
spinning away the miles,
the days, the years
of a solitary life in motion
a song that makes you shout and dance
but still only lasts 3 minutes –
to love me any more would be a danger
and you’re too smart for that
then forget my love-in-passing
as I’m careening towards the next boy
who will love me,
but only just so muchAbout the Author
