SILENT IN WEEDS

Empty benches bask in sunshine
as they watch each grass blade
grow like once-existent children
playing in the park.

Cottonwood trees mark time
with sundial trunk shadows
and leaves falling,
leaves unfurling.

Wrought iron fence
adds rust to its joints
until the squeaky gate
falls silent in weeds
gleeful to reclaim
their unruly possession
of their ancestral land.
