Trip
It seemed a bit too simple, I
thought there might be
more, but it was just earthy
and nutty, an overly hot
day and impending
sunstroke, shiitake earth
worm gums and frayed
Tibetan prayer flags
picking up the breezes, we
carved our names in the
wood with the stolen knife,
shaped like a bullet,
eyesight blurred, I saw
every grain of wood, and I
didn’t stop carving until I
was VL, the heart of the
whole gazebo, didn’t notice
when I sliced my thumb
until I was rocking back
and forth, knees crossed,
getting purple juice in the
cut, Bacchanal, the fruit
tasting better against
sunscreen and sweat,
yellow tooth gap laughs
and an honest to God bald
eagle flying above our raft.
